A Tour of My New Studio

It's only taken me three tries to finally get my studio/shop set up just right for sewing, quilting and packaging fabric. I thought you all might enjoy a tour of the studio.  Our new house is about half the size of our last house and surprising to some we absolutely love the smaller house! 

I have to say that my husband is the best husband a girl could ask for! I happily gave me the entire finished portion of the basement for my shop/studio. 

Straight in front of you when you first walk in is the sewing, pressing and project cutting stations.  The fabric shelves extend around the right side of the room.

On the sewing table to the side of the machine is an area with all the little gadgets most often needed when being creative.

To the left of the sewing station is the office/computer area.

This is my personal stash, WIPs, and a comfy rocker for handwork or a friend to join me for a day of fabric play and visiting.

To the right of the sewing area the shop's fabric shelves continue around the room. I'll be adding some more shelves soon for all the new fabric on it's way. In front of the sliding patio doors is a room divider displaying several of the quilts I've made and situated to protect the fabric from the afternoon sun. Just outside the sliding doors is a wonderful porch swing where I can take my hand stitching and enjoy the fresh autumn air.

Opposite of the fabric is the cutting and packaging station as well as my design wall. 

A wonderful feature of the area is that it has a full bathroom so I'm not having to run upstairs all the time. Thank God for the little things! 

 It is a wonderful creative space and shop area and I thank God and my husband for blessing me with such a wonderful gift! I'm enjoying working here and look forward to many hours of sewing, packaging fabric and sewing with friends who come by to enjoy the creative space with me!

A Long Time Dream

Many of you know that I've been dreaming about and working toward opening a local quilt shop. But, I've recently found that due to a lack of funds I'm unable to open a physical store right now. With my sweet hubby's wisdom we have a plan to come up with the needed funds to make this dream a reality.

The plan is to open an online quilt shop (fabric store) in the next couple of months or so and use the earnings to both grow the online store and save for the investment needed to open a physical store....of course it will all be in the Lord's perfect timing.

Among the many, many steps to opening this online store is figuring out what fabrics I will offer and whether or not I should specialize in something specific. I've found that the amount of fabric to choose from is almost overwhelming and figuring out what I should offer is a daunting task.

I absolutely LOVE fabric, but starring at all the possibilities kind of makes my eyes glaze over and my brain is simply overloaded.

I pray that the Lord gives me the wisdom I so desperately need each step of the way, especially the wisdom of where to start with fabric purchases for the store.

We spent this past weekend in Williamsburg and between our conversation concerning the online shop and the discovery of some fabric display shelves, that my sweet hubby will be making for the shop, I came home excited and ready to throw open the doors (figuratively speaking) to a new business, a new adventure and a new chapter of life. But, patience is a virtue, time to dive into the serious steps needed to open a successful business.

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts, please share any advice, words of wisdom or encouragement that you might have. I look forward to hearing form you!!

Beginning Again

Since my High School days, I've dreamed of owning and operating a custom sewing shop. Many years ago that dream came to fruition, but only for a short time. My first shop was known as, "Stitches Unlimited by Marcia Ann" and for the first time I experienced a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in what I was doing. I loved sewing for others and taking on new projects.

It was a bit of a short lived dream fulfillment, as the Lord lead my life in other directions. While I did continue to sew for my family's needs and from time to time for others, there was no longer a shop. My full-time job was focusing on homeschooling our boys.

Looking back on all this, it was definitely a providential change. Over the years I've realized that I tend to be an all or nothing type of gal, throwing myself so fully into the project I'm currently most passionate about  that I neglect almost everything else around me. Thankfully, with this realization I have gotten much better at time management and can now carve out the time needed to do what has to be done.  All those years ago, if I had continued to run a custom sewing shop, while at the same time homeschooling our boys, either the shop or the boys would have suffered. Neither of which was a good option. Thankfully when me moved to the Kansas City area, after much prayer the Lord lead me to the very specific choice of not re-opening the shop.
